1) Bonded labour system was the most deadliest one, found in certain parts of Tamilnadu. The people involved were treated like slaves. Majority of them do not own any land. Do not possess even huts, and do not have right to seek for alternate employment opportunities.

The State Government has taken up the task of identifying and re-habillitating the bonded labourers, in an effort to eliminate the system altogether. This was based on the Government of India’s legislation by the bonded labour system (Abolition ) Act 1976.

The District Collector identified our Institute for identification of the bonded labourers in the stone quarries, brick klins and in the rice-mills from selected blocks of Kancheepuram District, including Kattankolathur and Thirupporur Blocks. According to our study, these persons were residing within their campus and the people from outside were not allowed to visit them. They were given facilities like Television sets. The owners of the above companies were very particular in not providing them, the freedom to mingle with other populace.

We were able to identify 116 nos. of bonded labourers from our project area. The re- habilitation assistance of Rupees Ten thousand were provided to each beneficiary by the Government.

At a special rally conducted at the District Head Quarters, during March 1997, the Ministers and the District collector participated. The ICDS was represented and Mr.Xavier Chandrakumar also spoke on the occasion.

2) A Special 3 days programs was organized for quarry workers, numbering around 100 persons at Murugamangalam area.

3) By joining hands with other NGO action groups, ICDS organized 5 days campaign on eradication of child labour at Mambakkam and Thirupporur villages.

4) Education to child labourers : Non formal education classes conducted at several villages for the children from the above category i.e., child labourers. A total number of 12 tuition centers were arranged for these students at 12 villages form Kattukolathur block
