The Institute implemented path Project with the financial assistance of APAC-USAID
in NH-45 from Tambaram to Padalam, at a stretch of 45 Kms. The coverage area
consisted of truckers, WIPs, trucking services facilitation centers and the related
communities. The coverage range consisted both National and State truckers, who
cross the project area travel almost, through out the nation. The state truckers travel
in routine basis, throughout the state. They are highly active and transparent. Their
physical and emotional habits and their needs were innumerable and expected to be
met at their access wherever they were on the wheels.
The targeted area consisted of 278 trucking facility centers in all aspects. The same way,
there were more than 275 permanent women in Prostitutions, and if we count the
mobile ones the number exceeded in number.
These truckers had the external sexual contacts and also unsafe sexual behaviours
whenever they were on the high ways and away from their families. At these
circumstances, they were often exposed to the infections of STD/HIV/AIDS .

The WIPs who provided sex to these truckers also had good chance of getting affected .
Thus the STD HIV Aids conditions of the project area need to be intervened and
followed up earlier as the preventing and control of the infections among these target
group is must.
Various types of interventions include the prime activity of promoting condom usage
among CSWs and truckers in addition to one to one group education activities. This will
be in addition to the multifarious activities planned for secondary and tertiary target
population Involvement of peer educators is the routine educational activities were
highly encouraged as the sustainability par t of the project positively rested only on this
components.
The PATH Project by ICDS was Executed with commitment and hard work of the
following team:- The Project Director the Project Co-ordinator, Program Officer, Eight
Out reach Workers, STD Referral Motivator, Typist and Accountant.
The total execution of the project activities and events were closely monitored and
supervised by the project director and project coordinator based on the planned time
schedules of each activity components.

The findings, monitoring and supervisions were
included in the preceding weekly activities. The APC Consultant and Intervention Officer
also visited the project for PSV and verification. The mid term findings of the evaluation
team was also taken into consideration for improvement of activities.
The suggestions given by them were followed strictly on increasing the effectiveness of
execution the project. In the whole the five year of he project execution has been done
effectively and will also be done in the future.
The project area had been divided into two parts. One is trucker intervention and the other was
WIPs intervention. The truckers intervention consisted of the area in between Tambaram and
Padalam. The WIPs were found in an around Pallavaram to Dindivanam.
The trucker intervention area remain the same i.e 45kms range, but the WIPs
coverage’s ranges about 110 Kms Pallavarm to Dindivanam in the trucker intervention
target populations were covered for interventions in the WIP coverage area all the WIO
related interventions are carried out.

Altogether this intervention program was lasted for 6 years from 1997 onwards.
Major achievements through this project:- Total number of one to one interation
were around 77646 among truckers and 23491 among WIPS . The number of
group intervention were around 25491 among truckers and 2975 among WIPS.
No. of free condom distributed was around 3 lakhs and the condoms issued
through sale was around 4 lakhs. Altogether nearly 5 lakh IEC materials distributed
to the various target groups and thanks to the 180 peer educators , and the staff
members employed in various interventions spots.
AIDS intervention in and around Kovalam:
A special program was launched , to identify to identify women’s in Prostitution (WIPs)
in and around Kovalam of Thirupporur Block.
Within a short period of time, 54 WIPS were identified, who were all motivated to use
condoms and thus, a sense of awareness was created in 15 Lodges located at Kovalam
and surroundings.
Cultural programmer were also conducted.
Orientation Training cum meetings were conducted for WIPs.
Condom promotion was effectively undertaken which resulted with the distribution of
condoms numbering 19350 to the WIPS.
THE FOLLOWING WERE THE VARIOUS ACTIVITES OF THE PROJECT WORK:- Rapport building
among lodge owners and workers, Identification fo WIPS orientating training to WIPS condom
promotion through various outlets in the lodges and the petty –shops, IEC materials distribution
in the Lodges and conduct of cultural programmes in the selected villages form Thiruporur
Block.
This awareness project was started during December 1997. This progrmme was extended for
five years period.
