HEALTH AND SANITATION

    The primary health centres in specific areas of the district, provide health care to the people and this could not serve the purpose of solving the day to day health problem of the village populace. The construction of sanitary latrine in each house was a health measure, being under taken everywhere.


    Series of Medical Camps by Sankara Nethralaye
    • Construction of sanitary latrtine in the villages: The institute also threw its weight on this aspect, resulted with selection of 500 beneficiaries from about 30 villages from the project area. By this arrangement, nearly 20% of the people in each village were benefitted. In certain area like Karikattukuppam, effort under taken to benefit the whole village, as the women association came forward to motivate the people. The villages were ready to contribute a sizeable portion of the total cost of the latrine, in addition to the grant given by the State government and thus, an interest was created among Government officials to select this village.
    • Blindness constitutes the major part in the whole tragic situation of health problems in the villages. The arrest of this particular problem could be achieved by the maximum use of local resources like personneal, technology, medicines, finances, traditional practitioners and drugs. A major eye surgical camp was planned by ICDS, in collaboration with the Thulasi Trust of Chennai and the Sankara Nethralaya Hospital of Chennai. Initially, eight locations like the Govt.       campus were identified for conduct of these camps, in such a way that, each should be accommodated with more than 1000 persons in each camp. In all these eight such camps, about 10,000 persons attended and they were all undergone with series of eye tests as well as fitness tests, to enable them fit for sorgical correction program. 259 surgeries done successfully. This process took nearly four months time. This was treated as a major achievement of ICDS, during those times.
    • Separate eye camps were organized at Kovalam, Thirupporur, Manambathy & Chembakkam. To further achieve this measure, united action is needed. The work of individuals and organization is however insufficient. However, the institute joined hands with the ‘Vision Vista’ of Thiruvotriyur in the efforts to give relief these categories of people. The village Volunteers identified about 89 persons and a special camp for final screening was arranged at our institutes premises on 22-12- ’07 and 10 persons undergone surgeries.
    • In collaboration with Lions’ Club of Madras, Rotary Club of Chennai and Leo club of Broadway, eye screening and spectacles’ distribution camps were organized 5 times at the premises of ICDS. More than 1500 persons were provided with eye glasses.

    • During the year 2016, the ICDS has decided to once again conduct series of Eye camp program utilising the services of Sanakara Nethralaya of Chennai, rhe No:1 famous eye surgical hospital in Asia. ICDS, use to have this program, every Saturday at Thirupporur Block village and every Wednesday at Chennai area locations. In this way ICDS hope to achieve its 100 th eye camp program, within the end of 2016. By the beginning of 2016, ICDS has thus conducted 11 th eye camp and sofar through these eleven camps, about 600 persons were treated and about 200 surgeries successfully finished. By arrangements with Sankara Nethralaya and other like minded welfare associations in the locality, the ICDS is marching successfully in conducting these camps at Kancheepuram and Chennai Districts.
    • A massive program for benefitting the 2000 BPL familieswith the package of providing medical benefit of, upto Rs.30,000/-each was floated by the Oriental Insurance Company of Thiruvallur Region. Thirupporur Block of Kancheepuram district was selected and work was entrusted to ICDS. Through this scheme, around about 8000 persons from these 2000 families were assured of for protection of their lives on occasional eruption of diseases followed by their hospitalisation.

      The 2000 families selected were issued with a smart card in token of their selection. The following villages were bebefitted through this scheme:- Kelambakkam,, Muttukkadu, Navalur, thazhambur, Kayar, Kanathur Reddykuppam, Vadanammeli, Siruthavur, Amur, Sembaakkam, Perunthandalam, Mullipakkam, oragadam, Illalur, Pudupakkam, Thaiyur, Thirupporur and Sonalur. A grand function was organized at our ICDS premises, where the key members from these villages were invited and distributed with these identity cards. The officers from Oriental Insurance Company Head Office attended this function. Through this 2 years long programme 56 persons got bebefitted.
    • Emergency Ambulance Scheme : 108 Ambulance Service Scheme being operated by the Tamilnadu Government is a successful program, which is appreciated by the people, from all walks of life. Before starting of this above scheme the Government of Tamilnadu identified few selected NGOs from Kancheepuram district, during 1997. ICDS was one among them. Through this scheme, the ambulance was provided, fitted with all emergency equipments. Two drivers and two nurses were appointed and this was 24 hours round the clock service. Those, who phone up for their emergency ailments were taken care of and the transportation services for SC persons were free of cost and for others little amount was collected for transportation. Hospitalisation and medical services were free for all cases. For accident cases, irrespective of caste, everything, including transportion were free. This program was formally inaugurated at Poonamalle, by the then Chief Minsiter of Tamilnadu Kalignar Karunanidhi.
