About 200 Sri Lankan refugees’ families stayed at Kelambakkam Cyclone Relief Centre,
during the year 1990, were helped with set of house hold articles consisting of stove,
bed sheets, buckets etc., with the assistance received from CRDS.
Ponmar village was adopted to distribute provisions like wheat, rice flour, milk powder
and oil packages for 300 families, with the assistance received from Tamilnadu Indian
Red Cross Society.
During drought situation in the area similar aid and articles distributed to 5 selected
villages, with the assistance received from MSSS. They also provided monetary
assistance for deepening of wells in selected villages.
During the heavy flood, Thaiyur village was badly affected. The paddy fields of the
villagers from all the 12 hamlet villages of Thaiyur badly affected. The Oxfam India came
forward to help these villages. Land reclamation project was thus implemented.
Monetary assistance to about 860 families with which they ploughed their damaged
paddy fields and once again cultivated. By this way they recovered from the heavy loss
due to this cyclone.
During the Tsunami, villages in the sea shore, including Semmanchery Kuppam and
Thaluthali Kuppam villages were badly affected. . They lost their houses. Caritas India
from New Delhi came to the rescue and five NGOs were selected headed by the nodal
agency CRDS of chenglepet to work for the welfare of the people from 12 villages along
the ECR route. ICDS was one among them and semmenchery and Thaluthalikuppam
villages were allocated to ICDS. About 150 new boats were supplied to them and about
800 new houses were constructed and handed over to them.
During this period, the Government of Tamilnadu, organized series of counseling
meetings utilizing the services of health department in all these 12 nos of Kuppam
villages and ICDS played major role to alleviate the sufferings through community
meetings jointly organized with Mahalir Thittam and health department.
